  49.     The Rectangle Selection tool is designed to select rectangular
  50.     regions of an image:  it is the most basic of the selection tools,
  51.     but very commonly used.  For information on selections and how
  52.     they are used in GIMP see <a href="ch02s04s04.html" title="4.4.┬áThe Selection">Selections</a>; for information on
  53.     features common to all selection tools see <a href="ch03s02.html#gimp-tool-select" title="2.1.┬áCommon Features">Selection Tools</a>.

  56.     This tool is also used for rendering a rectangle on an image.  To
  57.     render a filled rectangle, create a rectangular selection, and
  58.     then fill it using the <a href="ch03s06s02.html" title="6.2.┬áBucket Fill">Bucket Fill tool</a>.  To
  59.     create a rectangular outline, the simplest and most flexible
  60.     approach is to create a rectangular selection and then <a href="ch02s04s13.html" title="4.13.┬áStroking a Selection or Path">stroke</a> it.

  64.     easiest method is to shrink it with

  204.             The <span class="guilabel">Auto Shrink Selection</span> checkbox will
  205.             make your next selection automatically shrink to the nearest
  206.             rectangular shape available on the image layer.  The
  207.             algorithm for finding the best rectangle to shrink to is
  208.             "intelligent", which in this case means that it sometimes
  209.             does surprisingly sophisticated things, and sometimes does
  210.             surprisingly strange things.  In any case, if the region
  211.             that you want to select has a solid-colored surround,
  212.             auto-shrinking will always pick it out correctly.  Note that
  213.             the resulting selection does not need to have the
  214.             same shape as the one you sweep out.
